Zimbabwe’s three flagship safari destinations are not competitors — they are complements. Each offers an experience so different from the others that the most rewarding Zimbabwe itinerary typically combines all three.
Matobo is Zimbabwe’s most culturally and historically layered safari destination. The park has no lions or elephants — which means you can walk freely across it, including on guided rhino tracking experiences that bring you within metres of white rhino.
Best for: Rhino tracking on foot, San rock art, cultural depth, intimate guiding, photography, short stays (3–5 nights ideal). Stay at Matobo Hills Lodge — the only accommodation inside the UNESCO site.
Hwange is Zimbabwe’s largest national park and the country’s classic big-game safari destination. It holds Africa’s largest elephant population outside Botswana. Lion, wild dog, sable antelope, and exceptional birding round out an exceptional game viewing experience.
Best for: Elephant, lion, large mammal diversity, classic game drives, extended stays (4–6 nights).
Mana Pools, on the southern bank of the Zambezi, is Zimbabwe’s most remote and adventurous safari destination. Walking safaris without armed rangers (legally unique to Mana), canoe safaris on the Zambezi, and extraordinary wildlife density in a floodplain environment.
Best for: Walking safaris, canoe experiences, wilderness immersion, experienced safari travellers.
