Built into the landscape itself
The Matobo Hills are around 2.6 billion years old, granite kopjes shaped by wind and rain into forms that look almost deliberate.
The hills hold more than three thousand San rock art sites, one of the highest concentrations anywhere in southern Africa. The whole range is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Matobo Hills Lodge is the only accommodation inside that protected area.
Our chalets are built from the stone around them, roofed in thatch, and set so that each one looks out at the kopjes rather than at its neighbours.

A natural playground.
The Matobo Hills are a natural playground: granite boulders to scramble over, rock pools to explore, and space for children to be outside all day.
Family chalets sleep up to five. Activities are pitched to suit younger guests, and travel cots and high chairs are provided on request.
Children 4-11 at half price. Under 4s stay completely free.
After dark
Nothing to watch, except the sky.
There is no television in any of the chalets, and there never has been. The nearest town of any size is an hour away, so once the lamps go down the sky over the kopjes gets properly dark.
Most guests end up on the verandah longer than they meant to. Bring a jersey; the granite gives up the day's heat quickly once the sun is off it.

How do I get to Matobo Hills Lodge?
We are about 50 km south of Bulawayo, roughly 55 minutes by road. We arrange transfers from Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport (BUQ), and the drive is straightforward if you would rather self-drive.
What is the best time of year to visit?
Matobo is a year-round destination. The dry season from May to October suits rhino tracking, when the bush thins and animals gather at water. The green season from November to April brings lush landscapes and nesting raptors.
Is the lodge suitable for children?
Families are warmly welcomed. The Family Chalet sleeps up to five, activities are tailored for younger guests, and travel cots and high chairs are provided on request.
Can I track rhino on foot?
Yes, and it is one of the defining Matobo experiences. Our guides lead walking safaris into the Whovi Game Park, tracking both black and white rhino on foot among the granite.
What about the rock art and cave paintings?
The Matobo Hills hold one of the highest concentrations of rock art in southern Africa, with some paintings up to 40,000 years old. Several sites are within easy reach of the lodge.
Is there Wi-Fi and mobile signal?
Wi-Fi is available in the main lodge area. Mobile signal can be intermittent in the hills, which many guests come to appreciate.
What should I pack?
Sturdy walking shoes are essential, because you will be on granite. Layers for cool mornings and evenings, sunscreen, a hat, and binoculars if you have them.
