When planning accommodation in Matobo National Park, the most important question is how close to the experience you want to be. Matobo Hills Lodge is the only lodge situated inside the UNESCO Matobo Hills World Heritage Site. Step outside your chalet and you are already in one of the oldest and most extraordinary landscapes on earth.
Matobo National Park (also written as Matopos) covers approximately 424 square kilometres of southern Zimbabwe, around 50km south of Bulawayo. UNESCO designated the area a World Heritage Site in 2003, recognising its exceptional combination of geological formations, biodiversity, and living cultural heritage.
The landscape is dominated by ancient granite kopjes shaped over three billion years. Within and around these formations, the San Bushman people left over 3,000 documented rock art sites, some of the finest and oldest in the world. Today, the park protects one of Africa’s most significant populations of white and black rhino within a tightly monitored Intensive Protection Zone.
Most accommodation near Matobo sits on the park boundary. Matobo Hills Lodge is different: our 17 chalets are inside the UNESCO site itself. Wake before dawn and walk directly into a rhino tracking experience. Return at sunset without leaving the World Heritage landscape. For the considered traveller who has come specifically for Matobo, this distinction matters significantly.
Matobo Hills Lodge is approximately 50km south of Bulawayo. Bulawayo Airport (BUQ) has daily connections from Harare and Johannesburg. We arrange transfers from both the airport and Bulawayo city centre. View rates and book.
