Zimbabwe Safari Vacation — The Bucket-List Trip Most Americans Haven’t Discovered Yet
Most American travellers planning an African safari head straight for Kenya or Tanzania. Zimbabwe, sitting just south of the equator in southern Africa, rarely makes the shortlist — which is exactly why it should be at the top of yours. Exceptional wildlife, uncrowded parks, remarkable history, and extraordinary value. This is the Africa that safari veterans talk about.
At the centre of it all is Matobo Hills Lodge — the only lodge inside Matobo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that protects one of the world’s greatest concentrations of ancient rock art alongside a thriving white rhino population. Here’s how to plan your Zimbabwe safari vacation from the US.
Why Zimbabwe is Africa’s Best-Kept Safari Secret
Zimbabwe’s safari industry was, for many years, undersold to the American market. That’s changing. Travelers who’ve done Kenya and Tanzania and want something genuinely different are discovering Zimbabwe — and finding it delivers everything they were hoping for, without the crowds.
Zimbabwe has four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It has some of the finest national parks on the continent. Its guides are widely regarded as among the best in Africa — a product of a long walking safari tradition that requires a deeper level of bush knowledge than game drives alone. And it has Matobo: a destination so unusual, so densely layered with wildlife, history and landscape, that it consistently surprises even experienced safari travelers.

What Makes Matobo Hills Lodge Different
Matobo Hills Lodge is the only accommodation inside Matobo National Park itself. Not near the park. Not adjacent to it. Inside it — 17 stone-and-thatch chalets set among the billion-year-old granite formations of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
That means your game drive starts from your front door. Your sundowner is served on the kopjes as the sun drops behind the granite hills. And the wildlife — including a remarkable population of white rhino — is right there, all the time, because you never leave the park.

- World’s View — Cecil Rhodes’ burial site, a hilltop panorama of the wilderness that ranks among Africa’s great views.
