Outdoor dining beneath ancient granite at Matobo Hills Lodge

Bar & Restaurant

Fire, Stars & Stories

Every dish begins with the land — seasonal ingredients cooked over open flame by our local chefs, served where ancient granite meets the African sky.

The Dining Day

Every Meal, a Reason to Stay

Wood-fire cookery, local hands, and the ancient Matobo sky — from a quiet breakfast on the verandah to a three-course dinner beneath the stars.

Breakfast on the lodge verandah Morning

The Verandah Breakfast

7:00 am – 9:30 am

Unhurried and generous. Fresh bread from the kitchen, eggs cooked to order, and seasonal fruit — taken on the verandah while the granite hills warm in the early light. The kind of morning that makes you forget your itinerary.

Light midday meal in the open-air gazebo Afternoon

A Midday Rest

12:30 pm – 2:30 pm

Something lighter between the morning drive and the afternoon ahead. Our chefs prepare simple, well-made plates — grilled meats, garden salads, and Zimbabwean flavours that restore without weighing you down.

Dinner Over the Fire

7:00 pm – 9:30 pm

Three courses, cooked over open wood flame by local chefs who learned their craft here. Served in the thatched dining room or the open-air gazebo — and on clear evenings, on the granite itself, with the Maleme valley below and nothing above but sky.

The bar at Matobo Hills Lodge — floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the Maleme valley and rock pool

The Bar

Glass, Granite, and the Maleme Valley

Built into the crown of a granite boulder, the bar is the architectural heart of the lodge — floor-to-ceiling glass on every side, open to the full sweep of the Maleme valley and Mount Ififi beyond. Below, the natural rock pool catches the last of the light.

The house elixirs are mixed with fresh Zimbabwean ingredients — frozen cocktails, warm Irish coffees, and a signature Matobo Sunrise for sundowners. Behind the counter: Hendricks, Tanqueray No. 10, Glenmorangie 12, Buffalo Trace, and a considered South African wine list. Or simply a cold Zambezi and the view.

Most guests settle in around sunset. No one leaves quickly.

The Matobo Sunrise

The sundowner of choice at the lodge. Best ordered around 5 pm, best drunk slowly, facing west.

After Dark

Dinner, Announced by Drum

As the sun slips behind the balancing rocks and the first stars appear, a drum sounds across the lodge — dinner is ready. Step onto the terrace for a three-course meal cooked over open flame by local chefs, the scent of woodsmoke carried on the evening air and the Maleme valley stretched out beneath you.

Every ingredient is drawn from the farm that morning — seasonal, local, cooked with the kind of care that turns a meal into the memory you carry home.

For the Occasion

Starlit Dinner on the Granite

A few hundred metres from the lodge, a gentle climb brings you to the top of an ancient granite dome. A table is laid, lanterns are lit, and a full three-course dinner is served under open sky — with nothing between you and the southern constellations but the warm night air and the valley far below.

Sundowners on the granite can be arranged on request. Before dinner, climb to a private vantage point with a cocktail in hand as the light shifts across the hills — the valley colours changing by the minute. Ask our team to set the scene for you.

Your Table, Your Way

Every Guest, Every Plate

Our chefs cook from the farm each morning — seasonal ingredients, prepared from scratch, with nothing pre-packaged or pre-made. That means adapting a meal to your needs isn't an afterthought. It's simply how we cook.

Whether you're vegetarian, managing an allergy, or observing dietary laws, let us know when you book and we'll plan your meals alongside the rest — with the same care, the same courses, and the same wood-fire flavour.

No separate menus. No lesser options. Every dietary meal is crafted with the same three-course structure and presentation as the standard dinner. You eat what everyone eats — just made for you.

Vegetarian & Vegan

Full three-course meals built around seasonal vegetables, pulses, and grains from the farm.

Gluten-Free

Naturally gluten-free ingredients wherever possible, with careful preparation to avoid cross-contact.

Allergies & Intolerances

Dairy, nuts, shellfish, eggs — share your allergens and our chefs will plan every course accordingly.

Halal & Kosher

We accommodate religious dietary observances with advance notice — speak with us at the time of booking.

Children's Meals

Smaller portions, familiar flavours, and flexible timing for younger guests travelling with family.

Something Else Entirely

If it's not listed here, just ask. We'd rather know than guess — and we've yet to meet a requirement we couldn't work with.

The best time to share your dietary needs is when you book. Email bookings@matoposhillslodge.com or use the form above — our chefs will take it from there.
